What Is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a chronic condition that causes fluid buildup (edema) due to a compromised lymphatic system. It can occur in the arms, legs, or even the face, trunk, or genitals. Left unmanaged, lymphedema can lead to:
-
Painful swelling and tightness
-
Increased risk of skin infections
-
Decreased mobility
-
Open wounds or ulcers
-
In severe cases, life-threatening sepsis

How Physical Therapy Can Help
Our lymphedema treatment program is designed to reduce swelling, restore function, and teach you how to manage the condition long-term. Under the care of our specialist, you’ll receive a personalized plan that may include:
-
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): Gentle, hands-on massage to move fluid out of swollen areas
-
Compression Bandaging & Garments: To support fluid flow and prevent reaccumulation
-
Skin Care Education: To prevent infections and maintain tissue health
-
Custom Exercise Program: To enhance circulation and lymphatic movement
-
Self-Care Training: Empowering you to manage your condition independently
What to Expect from Lymphedema Therapy
Treatment frequency depends on the stage and severity of your lymphedema. Some patients may benefit from 2 sessions per week, while others may initially require care up to 5 times per week. Our goal is to progress you toward independence and confidence in managing your symptoms at home.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Ignoring lymphedema increases your risk for serious complications. If left untreated, the condition can progress to infection or even sepsis—a potentially life-threatening emergency. That’s why it’s critical to seek help from a Certified Lymphedema Therapist as soon as symptoms appear.
